…Govs police sacked for not rigging for APC — Youth

- By Latifat Opoola

The six police aides of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike were sacked for their roles of defending democracy instead of rigging for APC, a group has said.

The Rivers State Ethnic Nationalities Youth Association (RISENYA), a coalition of youth groups said yesterday that the sack was “unjust, unfair and cruel because they were sacked for trying to defend democracy from the hands of compromised agents of the government.”

A statement by RISENYA released in Abuja said attempts by security agents to manipulate the Rivers re-run polls in favour of one of the political parties, and the bravery put up by the gallant police officers attached to the governor who resisted saved the situation.

The statement, signed by Comrade Paul Ikuru and Mr Dateme Paul, said: “Whilst we acknowledge that there are undeniably professional security officers within the corps, what happened in Rivers State send a dreadful signal about the future of our democracy.

“Notwithstanding the unethical actions of their colleagues, six police officers who accompanied Governor Nyesom Wike to the result collation centre commendably demonstrated bravery and professionalism by preventing violence and the alteration of election results.

“However, these security officers, who were very professional in the discharge of their duty, were the ones who have been dismissed callously from service by the police even when the panel that was set up by the police authority to investigate their alleged offence had not sat,” the statement said.
