No gains without pains, APC tells Nigerians

13 Ondo lawmakers allege threat to life

The All Progressiv­es Congress (APC) yesterday assured Nigerians that despite the current hardship, there will be light at the end of the tunnel as there can be no gains without pains.

The party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, also appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the Muhammadu Buhari-led administra­tion and remain steadfast in the face of the current economic challenges.

It gave assurance that government would continue to roll out palliative measures to cushion the pangs of the recession, adding Thirteen “anti-speaker” lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly who fled to Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday have alleged threat to their lives.

The allegation came in the aftermath of the impeachmen­t of the erstwhile Speaker, Jumoke Akindele and two others.

A total of 20 legislator­s in the state assembly on Friday, January 27 impeached Akindele along with the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Olotu and Majority Leader, Ifedayo that government would continue to work hard to reposition the economy.

It hailed the conduct and profession­alism displayed by security and allied agencies, particular­ly the Nigeria Police Force, during last Monday’s protest marches by members of some civil society groups and celebritie­s for and against the government.

The APC urged the security agencies to continue to adhere to the highest standards of profession­alism while dischargin­g their constituti­onal duties of protecting the lives and properties of citizens.

“As we stated earlier, the freedom to protest peacefully is a democratic right and the APC will Akinsoyinu, over alleged N15 million fraud scandal.

At a press conference in Ibadan, yesterday, the 13 lawmakers, led by Iroju Ogundeji, called on the Inspector General of Police and the Commission­er of Police, Ondo State Command, to come to their aid on the grounds that their lives were under threat.

Ogundeji alleged that since the removal of ex-speaker Akindele, in accordance with Section 92 of 1999 Constituti­on (as amended), they have continued receiving threat messages and continue to defend t h e rights of Nigerians to express their democratic rights no matter how they choose to within the ambits of the law,” the party added. telephone calls unknown callers.

Based on this, Ogundeji called on the Inspector General of Police and Ondo State police commission­er, “to provide adequate security for us and protect our families.”

He said: “We have been receiving death threats in telephone calls and messages from strange and unknown people in recent times. We remain resolute on the side of truth for we are against corruption.

“We are equally calling on heads of security from agencies in the state to withdraw their men from Mrs Akindele, she is no more the Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly. The speaker is Malachi Coker, and the majority of us are in support. After his emergence, the House had sat for more than two times.

“Twenty out of 26 members signed the notice of impeachmen­t. The impeachmen­t has come to stay and there is no going back because the members that carried out the impeachmen­t formed the majority of the House as at then,” he said.
