Consumers berate network providers over poor services

- From Hassan Ibrahim, Lafia

Telecommunication consumers in Nasarawa state have berated all the service providers in the country over poor service delivery in the state.

The consumers expressed their grievances at the 25th Consumer town hall meeting organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Keffi, where they complained about issues of poor signals, drop calls, unsolicited messages and ring back tones, data usage speed amongst others.

Speaking at the event, Chairman, Wheel of Hope Consumer Advocacy, Jide Abdullaziz emphasized the need for telecom service providers in the country to adequately educate their consumers about services for maximum benefit.

A consumer, Sam Emenike, urged the NCC, to adequately protect the interest of the consumer by compelling the service providers to address those issues.

He challenged the regulatory body not to relent in sanctioning defaulting service providers as a way of protecting the rights of the consumers.

In his remark, Director, consumer affairs bureau at NCC, Abdullahi Maikano, said the town hall meeting was to bring together telecom consumers in the urban areas with network providers and regulators to discuss and proffer solutions to consumer-related issues.

He said the theme “Information and Education as a Catalyst for Consumer Protection” was chosen to reflect NCC’s core objective of ensuring the protection of consumers against market exploitation.

He listed the various platforms where complaints could be channelled to NCC for intervention, which included a toll-free line (622), consumer web portal and social media
