A decomposed corpse of a yet to be identified man has been found under a bridge few metres from Jabi Lake Mall, in Abuja.

Some residents expressed concern over the stench that was oozing from the corpse which was noticed in the area since the weekend.

Usman Gwanda, a resident who claimed to have cut leaves to cover the corpse, said he saw the corpse on Friday but was surprised that it was not evacuated since then.

Usman said the corpse was without any physical injury as far as he could see.

“We have been passing here and the whole place stinks as nobody removed the corpse,” Ann Ayuba, another resident said, condemning how people only came to look at the corpse without reporting to the appropriate authorities.

Police men and officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) however evacuated the corpse at about 4.00pm on Monday.

The board’s spokesman, Ibrahim Muktar, said the enforcement team of the board evacuated the corpse after a clearance was obtained from the police.

“Once a corpse like that unclaimed and is removed, is taken for burial because it is it is classified as unclaimed and there are no people coming for it and to protect public health too we just take it to the burial site and do the needful,” he said.

Also reacting, the Utako Divisional Police Officer, CSP Sani Omolori Aliyu, confirmed the incident.

“We invited officials of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to evacuate the body. The body was already decomposing and inhabitants were complaining of foul smell so it is a health hazard to the society,” he said.

He added that the body was discovered on Sunday evening and AEPB officials evacuated it for burial on Monday.
