Kuemian eyes more Champions League goals for Rivers Utd

- By David Ngobua

Rivers United striker, Guy Kuemian has promised to score more goals for the ‘Pride of Rivers’ in this year’s CAF Champions League.

The Ivorian import scored a brace last Sunday to help Rivers United defeat visiting Al-Merriekh of Sudan 3-0 in Port-Harcourt.

Esosa Igbinoba scored Rivers United third goal to complete the rout of the Sudanese giants.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the striker expressed satisfaction with his performance and said barring unforeseen circumstances, he would score more goals for the Nigeria representatives. He said his performance against Al-Merreikh has boosted his confidence and he is not going to take his foot off the pedal.

“It was a wonderful performance from all us. I am happy that I scored my first goals in such a prestigious competition.

“I dedicate the goals to my team mates who supplied me with the passes. This is just the beginning for me as I hope to score more goals in the Champions League.

“My confidence is now high and I believe I can do even better than I have been doing. I won’t slow down but keep working hard,” he said.

Kuemian also said the return leg against Al-Merriekh will be tough but Rivers United will still come out tops as he said they cannot afford to miss out of the group stage.

According to him, Rivers United are carrying the hopes of millions of Nigerians so nothing short of the group stage will be good enough.

“Although we defeated our opponents convincingly, it was not an easy match. We dominated the first half but they returned strongly in the second stanza.

“We don’t need anybody to tell us that the return leg will be more difficult than the first leg. However, we shall prepare very well for them.

“At this stage we have come, we cannot settle for anything less than the group ticket. Much is expected from us but we shall not allow any pressure to weigh us down,” he assured.
