Federer powers past Nadal, Kyrgios beats Djokovic in Indian Wells

Roger Federer played superbly to claim a third straight win over Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career and reach the last eight in Indian Wells.

The Swiss, 35, won 6-2, 6-3 to follow up his Australian Open final victory over the Spaniard two months ago, when Federer won his 18th Grand Slam title.

He will next face Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, who upset world number two Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Svetlana Kuznetsova was the first player into the women’s semis.

The eighth seed saw off fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchen­kova 6-3, 6-2 and will meet Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova, after she beat Spain’s French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6’ 7-6.

In the pair’s 36th meeting - and first before the quarterfin­als of a tournament since their initial meeting in Miami 13 years ago - Federer notched his 13th victory and third in a row. A former Olympic heptathlon champion Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill has announced she is expecting a second child.

In a post on her Twitter account, the Sheffield star said she was “so happy” at the news.

Ennis-Hill, 31, who won a gold medal at the London games in 2012 and a silver in Rio de Janeiro, already has a Reggie.

Following her retirement from athletics last year she was made a dame in the New Year Honours list.
