Abuja residents advocate campaign against bush burning

-

Some residents of Abuja on Monday, urged relevant waste management agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to embark on campaign against indiscriminate bush burning and setting fire on dump sites.

The residents gave the advice in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

They also stressed the need for such agencies to sensitise Nigerians on the dangers of indiscriminate bush burning, to check loss of lives and property worth millions of naira to inferno.

Mr Nuhu Ridwan, a resident of Mpape Area of FCT, called on appropriate agencies to educate the teeming rural populists to understand the causes and effects of bush burning on the ecosystem.

Mrs Grace Afolabi, a trader at Deidei Area, advocated education and community awareness to enlighten the people, especially on the threat posed to environment and property by indiscriminate bush burning.

“In dependent capitalist societies such as Nigeria, creating environmental awareness to the teeming rural-based population, with low literacy levels, is the best option to address bush burning.

“This will be achieved by organising workshops, conferences, seminars and use of the media.

“The awareness campaign is aimed at educating the public on how to manage and improve on the relationships between human society and the environment in an integrated and sustainable manner,’’ Afolabi said.

Mr Philip Nnadi of Life Camp Area also stressed the need for effective sensitisation of the public, through the media, for them to prevent indiscriminate bush burning, especially during dry season.

Nnadi also urged environmentalists and related agencies of government to continue to sponsor jingles on radio and television stations on the dangers of setting fire on bushes and dump sites.
