Residents call for evacuation of refuse on Jikwoyi football field

Some residents within phase II, Jikwoyi AMAC, Abuja, have called on the authorities to ensure the evacuation of the refuse dumpsite, which is threatening to take over the football field, before the commencement of the rains.

The dumpsite, which is adjacent the phase II mini market, has kept on mounting without proper attention from the refuse collectors, the residents said.

A shop owner opposite the field said though the refuse kept increasing because of the activities of scavengers, the odour was a serious problem to them at their shops.

“You know scavengers go around to collect refuse and dump them on the field and those responsible for collecting the refuse do not come into the residential areas but operate only along the express road,” he said.

The little rainfall experienced recently, according to him, has raised their concern adding, “we are just scared of the rainy season because the whole place will be messy and smelly, besides that won’t be good for our health.”

A trader in the mini market, said since the evacuation last year, the refuse had been piling up without any attention from the authorities.

“I don’t know why they want to wait till it takes over the whole place before they will come to evacuate it. Our fear is when the rain commences in full,” she said.

A housewife, Bosede Dare, said her concern was that the refuse dump was by the market where foodstuff were sold and patronized by almost all the residents within the place.

“For now, the place is a bit fair but the moment the rain starts, you cannot stay even near the place.Please help us tell them to please come and clear this place fast to avoid health problems for the people,” she said.
