Reps probe NBC over ‘harmful’ beverages
The House of Representatives has resolved to probe the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) for allegedly producing beverages that are harmful to consumers.
The House said an ad-hoc panel would be constituted to also investigate beverages produced companies country.
Adopting a motion by Rep Rotimi Agunsoye (APC, Lagos), the House urged the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to review composition of all carbonated drinks in Nigeria to ascertain their chemical by in other the components.
Leading debate on the motion, the lawmaker said recent revelations showed that some products by the NBC could cause severe or terminal harm on unsuspecting members of the public.
“Sprite and Fanta, which are products of the Coca-Cola Company, are said to contain unhealthy concentrations of Benzoic Acid and Sunset Yellow additives, which become poisonous when combined with Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin C,” he said.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers after some amendments to the original prayers of its sponsor.
