CITY NEWS Two policemen shot dead while Police arrest 20 over illegal possession of escorting money in Kubwa hard drugs

Two policemen guarding a microfinan­ce bank in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), were on Tuesday shot dead by gunmen.

City News gathered that the policemen were escorting some bank officials to the bank’s main branch at Dutsen Alhaji around 4pm when the incident happened.

The gunmen, who allegedly trailed the vehicle, shot at it and punctured its tyres, forcing it to stop. Witnesses said the gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, then took away some money and fled the scene.

Three officials of the bank, a driver, a cashier and another staff, who survived the attack with injuries, were moved to the Kubwa General Hospital.

Our reporter who visited the scene of the incident around Phase 4 area of the town yesterday, learnt that the two policemen were sitting at the back seat of the vehicle, with one of the bank officials while another staff was in the front with the driver when the vehicle was attacked.

Head of Accident and Emergency of the Kubwa General Hospital, Mr. P.N Oluse, confirmed that the remains of the two policemen had been deposited at the hospital’s morgue, while the three injured bank officials have been attended to, and discharged yesterday.

The microfinan­ce bank was locked up when our reporter visited, as their officials were said to have been invited by the police for questionin­g over the incident.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kubwa, CSP Ayobami Surajudeen, said the police was investigat­ing the matter. The police in Gwarinpa have arrested 20 people suspected to be dealing in Indian hemp and other hard drugs.

The suspects, according to police sources were arrested at Kado Biko Market on First Avenue at about 9:00p.m. on Sunday.

A source said policemen raided the place after days of surveillan­ce by detectives.

The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP Nuruddeen Sabo, who confirmed the arrest said Indian hemp, codeine and other hard drugs were found on the suspects.

He said the place was notorious for dealers and buyers of hard drugs including children of rich men.

“We raided the place on Sunday and recovered hard drugs and about 20 people were arrested,” he said, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted.

He also said the division foiled an early morning robbery attempt on Third Avenue while three suspects were arrested.

He said police were informed about the robbery at about 5:30a.m. but the suspects had already dispossess­ed the victim, who was identified as Joy, of her ATM card and handset before the surveillan­ce team got to the scene.
