CRIME Pastor attempts to bomb church in Edo

- From Usman A. Bello, Benin

The police have paraded a Beninbased pastor, who gave his name as Abel Eku, for alleged attempting to bomb the headquarters of a church, the Christ Chosen Church of God.

He was said to have planted explosives inside the auditorium of the church headquarters on January 22, when the church was to hold an international conference.

It was gathered that the explosives were detected by some members of the church who invited the police to detonate the explosives.

Speaking to journalists at the police headquarters, Pastor Abel said he planted the bomb as a result of his dismissal from the church over marital issues after serving it for 22 years.

He said, “The bomb was not meant to kill but to scare the church members and elders. I did it out of annoyance but later I regretted my action and I called the church officials after planting it to inform them about the location of the bomb.

“I am 57 years old. I had marital issues with my wife. We came to the church to resolve it and it was not resolved. It led to my dismissal. I was very bitter about the dismissal. I don’t have the intention of killing people. My action is very bad,” he admitted.

The state Police Commissioner, Haliru Gwandu, assured that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.
