Kwararafa University needs N500 million to expand

The Vice- Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Wukari in Taraba State, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, has said the university needs N500 million to provide more infrastruc­ture and start new academic programmes.

He said at the maiden convocatio­n of the university, Saturday that the the money was for the developmen­t of facilities at the permanent site to enable for the expansion of undergradu­ate programmes.

Professor Ochefu explained that the funds would also ensure the commenceme­nt of post graduate studies.

He said Kwararafa, a private institutio­n, required more funds in order to achieve 100 per cent accreditat­ion of all its courses. He said, the university would introduce law, humanities, Jukun languages, environmen­tal science and light engineerin­g courses in 2017.

“Kwararafa University is the only community- owned university in the entire West Africa and therefore all community members of Kwararafa extraction should contribute towards the developmen­t of the institutio­n.” Professor Ochefu said.

He commended former defence minister, General Theophilus Danjuma, for providing a library to the university.

A total of 1,314 students graduated out of which seven obtained first class degrees during the ceremony.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, wife of General T.Y.Danjuma, Senator Daisy Danjuma and Professor Julius Okojie were conferred with Honorary Doctorate degrees while the Andoma of Doma, Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo, was installed the first Chancellor of the university.
