Varsity lecturers grumble over ‘incomplete’ salaries

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano zone, has said since 2015, its members receive a fraction of their monthly salaries.

The union said its members were paid as low as 40 per cent of their salaries in some instances and in that way increasing economic pain.

This was disclosed by ASUU zonal coordinator, Professor Mahmud M. Lawan, during a press conference held at Bayero University Kano.

He said “As we have consistently maintained to the public, the government attitude have eternally been characterised by lack of implementation, disrespect and serial violations of agreements. The situation is in recent past made worse by denial of staff’s legitimate earnings and entitlements.”

He described the socioeconomic situation in the country as heightened by malignant corruption and the wholesale adoption of neo-liberal economic prescription of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank by the ruling class in the country.
