Residents, govt differ over attack on Bello’s convoy
Residents and Kogi State Government yesterday differed over a mob attack reportedly carried out on the convoy of Governor Yahaya Bello at Idah Local Government Area of the state.
Daily Trust gathered from locals that some angry youths and market women Wednesday evening pelted vehicles in the convoy of the governor at Ega Market in Idah while returning from Ibaji where he had gone to flag off a road project.
It was learnt that the mob, who had mobilised themselves to the roadside upon hearing the sound of the siren in the governor’s convoy, threw stones damaging about three vehicles in the convoy.
The mob were said to have carried out the action to register their grievances over wages being owed workers and pensioners.
Following the development, it was said that security agents shot sporadically into the air, causing people to scamper for safety.
Meanwhile, the State Government has denied any mob attack on the convoy of the governor.
The Director General on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr Kingsley Fanwo described as ‘blatant falsehood the reports by some group of rumour peddlers’ that the governor was attacked’ when he visited Kogi East to flag off a major road project and also attend to issues of security of the people in the area.
”The people of Kogi East are wonderful people who cherish what the governor is doing to develop the district. Insinuating that they attacked a governor who has brought development to their domain is an insult to the sensibilities of the good and great people of the district,” Fanwo said in a statement.
