Firms supply 708mw of electricit­y in excess

The 11 electricit­y Distributi­on Companies (DisCos) have supplied electricit­y in excess of 708 megawatts (mw) within a 16-day period in February and March, the Daily Trust reports.

An exclusive industry statistics obtained by our reporter showed that the DisCos were allocated 76,710mw from February 15 to 28, and from March 7 to 14, 2017. They consumed 65,729mw by distributi­ng it to the end users of electricit­y (customers). The balance of 780.38mw was taken in excess by a few of the DisCos to add to their inefficien­t allocation­s.

Eko DisCo, whose franchise area covers the industrial­ised part of Lagos, took the highest excess load of 334.58mw. It is entitled to 11 per cent of total energy from the national grid.

The next is Port Harcourt DisCo with 119.33mw whose franchise is in five southern states. It is entitled to 6.5 per cent of the daily grid allocation.

Ibadan DisCo took 55.68mw excess load; it is entitled to 13 per cent allocation. Enugu DisCo gets nine per cent allocation to cover the five eastern states; it took electricit­y load in excess of 53.38mw.

Abuja DisCo which covers Nigeria’s capital and three other North Central states consumed an excess load of 52.76mw during the period. It is entitled to 11.5 per cent of load from the grid.

Benin DisCo covering Delta, Ondo, Benin and Ekiti took excess of 34.15mw; it often gets nine per cent of the grid allocation. Kano DisCo which covers Jigawa, Kano and Katsina and gets eight per cent power allocation, took excess of 33.02mw.

Jos DisCo which gets 5.5 per cent daily allocation took 32.25mw in excess. The utility firm distribute­s electricit­y to Benue, Bauchi, Plateau and Gombe states.

Ikeja DisCo in Lagos took extra load of 25.88mw in the period while being entitled to 15 per cent of the grid capacity.

Kaduna DisCo, covering Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kaduna states, gets eight per cent power allocation. It took excess load of 24.50mw.
