Magu: Reps ask Buhari to go to court
The House of Representatives yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to seek interpretation from court over the confirmation of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.
The House said the president should seek an interpretation of the EFCC Act to ascertain if there was any ‘contrived conflict’ in it.
The lawmakers position followed a recent statement credited to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that based on constitutional provisions, the appointment of Magu did not require Senate confirmation.
Adopting a motion by Minority Leader, Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta), the House urged officials of the Executive arm to refrain from making statements that connote usurpation of the powers of the judiciary.
Ogor said by the provision of Section 2 (3) of the EFCC Act, the president reserves the right to nominate the commission’s chairman subject to the confirmation of the Senate.
