We do not dispense contaminated water – Kaduna Water Corporation
The Acting Managing Director of Kaduna State Water Corporation, Douglas Njimen, yesterday said that the corporation does not dispense contaminated water to consumers.
He was reacting to a Daily Trust independent water investigation which revealed that water samples obtained from Babandodo Street in Kakuri, an area in Kaduna South LGA, contained harmful germs.
Njimen, who said the water dispended by the board is treated and acceptable on world standard, added that it was unfair to pick a single place and use it to adjudge Kaduna State Water Corporation.
“There are 16 districts, nine plants under the Kaduna State Water Corporation with each plant having a laboratory. Surprisingly, only a particular place was picked for the analysis in a state that has 16 districts. Even if Kaduna metropolis is been taken into consideration, samples should have been taken from Kaduna Central, North and South part of the metropolis,” he said.
The Acting MD however said that “along the routes where we transport the water, so many things happen, which sometimes are beyond our control. We are happy, that a water regulatory commission has been established to sanction offenders, regulate water tariff and regulate anything that has to do with water. It is disheartening that some of our water pipes are under refuse dump and because we don’t have a law, people do things the way they like as such, anytime the water pressure is low and if there is a crack or joint that is not properly tied, contamination can find its way into the water.”
He therefore warned private plumbers to desist from doing haphazard jobs while he appealed to citizens of the state to report any water problem they encounter to the Corporation.
