CITY NEWS Corps member, 3 others die in auto crash at Awawa Customs officer commits suicide in Gwarinpa

Ayouth corps member, Olanipekun Oluwaseun Emmanuel and three others lost their lives in a motor accident which occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Awawa village, on AbujaLokoj­a road.

Our reporter also learnt that a pastor, Ojo Olasupo, was among the three that died in the crash that left nine people seriously injured.

A witness said the accident happened at about 5:12a.m.when an 18-seater commuter Hiace bus with registrati­on number XC 991 ASB lost control after overtaking another vehicle.

He said the bus driver lost control of the steering and the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a ditch, saying the four dead passengers, including the corps member were taken to the mortuary.

City News learnt that the deceased corps member, who was expected to attend his passing out parade boarded the bus in Akure, Ondo State on his way to Kaduna, when the bus crashed.

When contacted, the Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Assistant Corps Commander, Olasupo Esuruoso, confirmed the incident.

He attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking, saying the remains of the corps member and three others have been deposited at Abaji General Hospital.

He said nine people, comprising seven males and two females were taken to the same hospital for medical treatment.

“And we have also recovered the sum of N153, 310 cash when my men went to the scene to rescue the victims and handed over the money to a relative of one of the deceased, Suleiman Ambali,” he said.

The cause of the suicide was yet to be ascertaine­d.

Sources said the man, identified as Christian, 44, locked himself in a room and hung himself with a rope on Saturday.

A source said the deceased, who was unmarried, was staying with his brother and was said to have been recently transferre­d to Lagos before the incident happened.

The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP Nuruddeen Sabo, said the brother whom the deceased stayed with was at a barber’s shop when the incident happened.

He said the man was confirmed dead at the Kubwa General Hospital.

“Exhibits recovered include some drugs and knife.” Preliminar­y investigat­ion, he said, had revealed that the deceased was suffererin­g from depression.
