Obaseki commissions first road project

- From Usman A. Bello, Benin

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has commissioned 500 meter concrete pavement road executed by his administration in Benin metropolis.

The newly reconstructed Nevis Street road which linked four major roads was constructed by AG Dangote Construction Company Limited using the concrete pavement technology.

Commissioning the road, Obaseki said with the successful completion of the road using concrete pavement technology, about 45 concrete roads have been earmarked for construction across the 18 local governments of the state.

The governor promised to construct 3000 kilometers of roads within his first four years in office, using the same technology.

He noted that the state did not need to depend on foreign exchange for road construction any more as all materials and human capital could be sourced locally.

He explained that the concrete road was a pilot scheme, noting that the initiative marks revolution about the way roads would be constructed in Edo State and the country at large.

Obaseki said, construction of “this The Nevis Street within seven weeks showed that this government can make promises and fulfill them. We will train our youths on roads design and construction without waiting for foreign exchange. We have all the raw materials here.”

Earlier, the Managing Director of AG-Dangote, Mr. Ashif Juma, said the road was constructed in compliance with Governor Obaseki’s directive that the materials must be sourced locally.

He commended the Obasek-led government for embracing micro concrete road construction, saying the concrete roads were cheaper and durable.
