Customs: Eastern Marine Command controller, Bello retires

The Controller in charge of the Customs Eastern Marine Command, Port Harcourt, Comptrolle­r Usman Bello Kankara has retired statutoril­y on Tuesday after attaining 35 years in the service.

Comptrolle­r Bello, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) reached the apex rank of Comptrolle­r of Customs at the Service in 2009.

He has headed several Customs Area Commands including Kano, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Sokoto among others joined the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in 1982.

A statement from the public Relations Officer, EMC, Port Harcourt, Sunday Oyinloye said during his service year, Bello served as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Apapa Port and Tincan Island Commands and got the best PRO award of the service by the Comptrolle­r General of Customs in 1999.

As Customs Area Controller of Kano Command in 2010, he surpassed the revenue target with a wide surplus.

“This attracted the attention of the Service headquarte­rs in Abuja who promptly awarded him the Comptrolle­r General of Customs recommenda­tion,” a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Sunday Oyinloye said.

Comptrolle­r Bello was conferred with the traditiona­l title of Kanwan Katsina (Warrior) in November 2000 by the late Emir of Katsina, HRH Alhaji Kabir Usman CFR.

The statement said Comptrolle­r Bello will be missed by officers and men of the Service and other stakeholde­rs in the maritime industry.
