Police confirm killing of Enugu deputy gov’s orderly

- From Tony Adibe, Enugu

Unknown gunmen shot dead the police orderly to the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo on Tuesday night in Enugu, the Enugu State Police Command confirmed yesterday.

Contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ebere Amaraizu said it was the police orderly, not the Aide-De-Camp (ADC), who was killed.

But sources from the Government House Enugu said it was the ADC, Sgt Helen Sunday, who was actually killed by the gunmen, not the orderly as stated by the PPRO.

One of the sources even claimed that he actually exchanged pleasantries with Sgt Helen on Tuesday not realising that was the last time he would talk with her.

Some residents have expressed shock over the killing of the police woman, saying that it was risky to have allowed her to go back to the “notorious Abakpa Nike area” at about the time the incident happened.

“If she was in uniform, it wouldn’t have been advisable to allow her go back to the dangerous Abakpa area when it was 10pm or thereabout,” said a resident.

Another resident, Mr. Emmanuel Anike, said the boss should have asked her to live very close to her (Ezeilo’s) official residence, rather than “far away Abakpa, a place known for troublemaking and all sorts of criminality.”

Anike recalled that it was “in the same Abakpa Nike that a DPO was shot dead during the immediate past administration.”

Although details of the story was sketchy as at the time of going to press, Sgt. Helen was said to have been shot dead at Abakpa-Nike area of Enugu metropolis at about 10 pm on her way to her residence after official duty.

Amaraizu described the incident as “painful news,” but added that he was yet to establish exactly what really happened before he makes further comment on the story.

The PPRO further stated: “If you look at what happened, it is painful and sad to hear that aide to deputy governor was shot dead on her way back after daily activities. We can’t really say exactly what happened now but we are trying to find out.”
