FCT on security alert over B/Haram threat
Security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory have decided to scale up intelligence and surveillance to contain possible attacks by terrorists on the capital city.
The decision to this effect was taken over the weekend at an emergency meeting of the FCT Security Committee called to review the current security situation in the nation’s capital.
The security chiefs at the meeting noted with concern the recent threat by the Boko Haram sect to attack the FCT, but warned that the threat was not being taken lightly.
The meeting which was chaired by the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello was attended by the FCT permanent secretary, Dr Babatope Ajakaiye and security chiefs, paramilitary and religious clerics.
Participants resolved that the security agencies in collaboration with the FCTA would continue with efforts to ensure compliance with regulations on street hawkers, commercial motorcycles, tricycles, unpainted taxis and commercial sex workers in the FCT.
The minister said activities of these categories of people have given rise to illegal motor parks and other dark spots around the city, which could be used by hoodlums to perpetrate their nefarious activities.
After reviewing the measures taken to secure the Nyanya motor park, which was a target of bomb attack in 2014, the meeting expressed satisfaction with the facilities put in place to secure the lives of commuters.
The meeting also noted that the AYA, Area One and Berger Roundabouts have been hijacked by hoodlums and other miscreants due to the presence of illegal taxis and other commercial vehicles, thus resolved to embark on full enforcement to clear the areas.
