Delta new speaker’s party aide assassinated
A staunch party supporter of the newly elected Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Evang. Isaac A. Egagifo, has been reportedly hacked to death by assailants now at large.
The late Egagifo hailed from ward 7, Mejere, in Okpe Local Government of Delta state same ward with the new Speaker and his death Thursday is the second of the lawmaker’s supporters, who were killed in mysterious political circumstances.
The first was one of his closest political associates, who was murdered in cold blood during the April 2015 election that brought Hon. Sheriff Obiovwori as a lawmaker, while this latest assassination happened exactly seven days of his assumption as Speaker.
According to eyewitness, Egagifo’s assailants allegedly hit him severally with a rough and heavy substance in his hometown Mejere town in Okpe and left to died in his pool of blood.
Although, the facts of the matter that led to the gruesome murder could not be immediately ascertained but rife speculations point to the political schisms that greeted the removal of the former Speaker, Monday Igbuya, who is also an Okpe man.
A member of the family, Mr. Obaro Egagifo, hinted that a prime suspect has been arrested and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Homicide Department of the Police Headquarters in Asaba for further investigations.
Meanwhile the Speaker has described the killing as “callous and barbaric”, and tasked the police to get to the root of the matter and unravel the circumstances surrounding the death, as he lamented the loss of yet another supporter.
