‘Establishing National Toilet College will address environmental hazards’

- By Chidimma C. Okeke

An international environmental service provider, ANDELSTA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, has stated the need to establish a National Toilet College (NTC), saying it will address environmental hazards caused by poor sanitation.

The Managing Partner of Initiative for the Prevention of Mosquitoes (IPM), a group under ANDELSTA, Dr Ignatius Adeh, revealed that the establishment of NTC would address the spread of communicable diseases and other environmental hazards.

While speaking at a briefing in Abuja on the upcoming lunch of the National Mosquito Control and Liquid Waste Management Programme, he called on the ministries of Environment and Health, foreign and local other non-governmental organisations to partner with ANDELSTA in establishing the National Toilet College for enhanced sanitation practices in the country.

Adeh regretted that an average of 300 pupils shared one-time toilets in some schools, a situation he described as a time bomb for the spread of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.

While adding that NTC would be vital in promoting safe hygiene, he stated that the idea behind the concept was to meet the Sustainable Development Goals 7 (SDG’s) which indicated that every Nigerian must have access to a decent sanitation by 2030.

He further revealed that ANDELSTA would partner with BORDA Germany to unveil the Decentralised Waste Water Treatment System (DEWATS) in Nigeria meant to provide energy and safe water.

In his remarks, the Group Managing Director of ANDELSTA, Engr Fintan Ibeshi, said there was need to enforce proper sanitation technique to prevent environmental hazards, as well as the spread of diseases.

Ibeshi said for so long a time, sanitation issues had been ignored and as such became a big issue in the country.
