CITY NEWS Corpse of day-old baby dumped Democracy Day: Police intensify foot, vehicular patrol near hotel in Gwarinpa
The corpse of a day old baby has been dumped in a refuse heap near a hotel in Gwarinpa.
A police source said the baby, which was wrapped in a disposable bag was found by an employee of the hotel on Fourth Avenue on Saturday at about 7:00a.m.
The source said the baby, suspected to be a day-old, was already dead, and the umbilical cord was not yet cut when it was found.
He said the hotel employee reported at the police station.
The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP Nuruddeen Sabo, said investigation was ongoing to find the culprit.
He said, “We are still investigating, we are yet to get the culprit. The baby was just wrapped inside the dusbin. They have not cut the umbilical cord when it was found.”
He said the culprit might be living within the area but that investigation would be extended to other neighbouring hotels.
He said the corpse was evacuated by officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB). The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, has directed policemen to intensify foot and vehicular patrol ahead of the Democracy Day celebration.
He said intensive patrol throughout the festive period was part of the security measures put in place to ensure a hitch free celebration.
Kimo, in a statement by the command spokesperson, ASP Usen Omorodion, said the command will continue to be proactive in its effort to ensure the safety of residents.
“The commissioner of police has deployed more personnel on the streets of the FCT, in addition to operatives on surveillance duties to ensure a hitchfree celebration of Democracy Day,” he said.
