- From Eyo Charles, Calabar

Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, has confirmed the arrest of four persons in Calabar suspected to have stolen 4,555 National Identity Cards.

The commissioner told Daily Trust that the arrest followed a raid by his men at a suspected hard drug joint along Eyo-Edem Street in Calabar South where strange characters were believed to converge for their business.

He disclosed that one Donald Okon Ekong and his accomplice, Collins Cyril, were picked by his special squad.

He added that the suspects’ house was thoroughly searched where the said items were discovered.

“When my men searched the suspects’ house, 4555 National Identity Cards belonging to different persons, as well as a Voter’s Card belonging to one Sam Godwin were recovered in the course of the investigation”, he said.

Inuwa said as the case was still under investigation, two more suspects had been arrested and that they were currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, the state police command has also confirmed the impounding of a trailer-load of wheat suspected to have been stolen from Dangote Flour Mills in Calabar.

Inuwa said the impounding followed a tip-off by informants who hinted them about where the stolen wheat wwas kept.

He said the stolen wheat was kept inside the truck with vehicle No. DAL 222 XA, opposite Federal Library, on Otop Abasi Street, not far from the Cultural Centre.

The CP added that the stolen wheat was 120 bags of 100 kg each and that there were other processed bags of wheat (Semovita).

“My men on patrol had intercepted the truck when it was ready to move, and one Alhaji Kamilu Tsalha, who claimed ownership of the goods, was arrested alongside five others,” said Inuwa.

Speaking, the suspect, Kamilu denied stealing the goods. “I actually bought the goods from Dangote Flour Mills Calabar,” he said. He even showed a waybill No. 1694, dated 14-5-2017.

However, Inuwa said they had impounded the truck while investigation was still ongoing.
