- From Magaji Isa, Jalingo

Gunmen have invaded a farm settlement and killed three farmers in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Daily Trust gathered that the gunmen invaded the settlement at night and opened fire on the residents while they were sleeping and killed three farmers instantly and injured several others.

A resident of the area, Malam Bako Disol, told our reporter that it was not known where the attackers came from but that the area had been experiencing attacks by armed bandits in recent times which led to the deaths of many people, including a village head.

Malam Disol, who spoke with our reporter on telephone, said residents of the area who were mostly farmers now lived in fear because of the activities of armed robbers and other criminals.

He said communities in the area had engaged the services of vigilante to patrol the area but that because of the sophisticated weapons used by the bandits, cases of attacks on innocent people had persisted.

Malam Disol disclosed that a number of wealthy individuals were forced to move out of the area for fear of attacks.

“Cases of armed robbery and kidnapping had compelled wealthy individuals to relocate out of the area,” he lamented.

When contacted, the Chairman Gassol Local Government, Alhaji Yahuza, confirmed the killing of the three farmers in the area.

He said community leaders and other stakeholders had summoned a security meeting at Mutum Biyu to find ways of addressing security problems in the area.
