- By Musa Abdullahi Kirshi & Abbas Jimoh

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), and Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) have described the death of Professor Abubakar Momoh as shocking and great loss to the country.

Until his death yesterday, the late Momoh was a prominent civil society leader and Director General of the Electoral Institute (TEI) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); and also the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Lagos State University (LASU).

The Executive Directors of CHRICED Dr Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, CISLAC Auwal Musa Rafsanjani and CDD Idayat Hassan in separate statements, said they would honour the late Momoh and urged Nigerians especially the youths to emulate him especially that his death came when Nigeria was marking the Democracy Day.

“In deep shock and with heavy hearts, we at CHRICED mourn the passage of the pioneer chairman of our Board of Directors, and member, Advisory Council, Professor Abubakar Momoh. Professor Momoh’s demise this morning, to say the least, is the unkindest of all cuts. In our hearts, he will be remembered as a forthright and courageous man, who defied the odds to stand up for what he believed in,” the statement said.

They said the organisations were consulting the immediate family of the deceased and will announce a public event in his honour.
