CRIME Kano police arrest 570 rapists, 202 armed robbers in 1 year

The Police in Kano State arrested 570 suspected rapists and 202 armed robbers between July 2016 and May 2017.Out of the figures, 31 suspected rapists and 13 armed robbers have been convicted, while 539 suspected rapists are still awaiting trial at various courts in the state.

Similarly, 95 cases of sodomy were reported to the police during the period and 51 suspects arrested and nine of them convicted.

A statement from the police, signed by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said 95 arms, 692 live ammunition, 521 live cartridges, 58 motorcycle­s and 15 tricycles had been recovered from the suspects.

The statement further stated that 119 suspected kidnappers had been arrested in the state and that 82 of them had already been convicted, adding that: “42 kidnap victims have been rescued and 78 arms, various kinds of ammunition and N2, 750,000.00 have been recovered.”

The statement added that 69 persons had lost their lives and 112 suspects arrested in relation to the 86 homicide cases that were reported to the police during the period under review.

According to the statement, property worth N107, 648, 059.00 and suspected hard drugs valued at N60m had been recovered, noting that all the drugs were burnt after officials of the Kano State Ministry of Health had certified them as substandar­d.

Shedding more light on the developmen­t, the Kano State Commission­er of Police, Rabiu Yusuf, said the success was as a result of effective deployment of the combined forces of covert and overt operatives, community partnershi­p and rapid response in dealing with criminal elements in the state.

“Crimes of armed robbery, kidnapping, ‘yan daba’ and drug activities have been subdued in the state,” the CP said.
