Lawal wants early goals against Bafana Bafana

- By David Ngobua

Former international, Garba Lawal has charged the Super Eagles to go for early goals when they go up against arch-rivals, the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Saturday’s 2019 AFCON qualifier in Uyo.

Although the Eagles are highly favoured to come out victorious, the former Roda JC of Holland star said they must not take anything for granted.

He said it is too early to forget how the South Africans stopped the Super Eagles from going to the 2015 AFCON to defend the title they won in 2013 in South Africa.

Lawal added that any match between the two nations is always difficult because the Southern African country likes to resist Nigeria’s dominance.

He said it will be another difficult encounter for the Super Eagles but if they score early, it would help them to unsettle their opponents.

“It will not be an easy match but I tip the Super Eagles to beat South Africa. Anytime they are to play against Nigeria, they redouble their efforts because of the rivalry that exist between us.

“The way to go about it is to score early goals. If the Eagles would go in front in the early stages of the match, they will surely dampen the morale of their opponents,” he advised.

Lawal however cautioned the Eagles against throwing caution to the wind as he said the South Africans are tricky customers and could wreak havoc, if not watched closely.

He said there must be coordination in all the departments because if the defence fails to give the necessary support to the midfield, the attackers would be without supplies.

“I believe it is good to score early but at the same time, they cannot afford to be caught napping at the back. They must organise themselves at the back while going forward.

“With the way the team is playing now, I have no doubt in my mind that they will beat South Africa on Saturday in a convincing manner,” he assured.
