Kuje farm turns agric waste to 20kw of electricity
Ajima Farms, Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory will today launch 20kw of electricity and distribution, via mini-grid to approximately 550 individuals in the rural off-grid community of Rije, Abuja.
The technology is the farm’s Waste-2-Watt (W2W) renewable energy project, used for generating electricity for off-grid farming communities in Nigeria.
Ms Fatima Oyiza Ademoh, Project Developer, Energy Division in a press statement yesterday said the farm’s approach is using a bio-gas digester to convert agricultural and communal waste (poultry, livestock, crop waste, kitchen & human wastes) into electricity & cooking fuel.
“As proven, the environmental impact of land filling large volumes of agricultural and other organic waste is extremely dangerous. Decomposition of these waste leads to release of methane into the atmosphere, which is 24 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas,” she said.
The statement stressed that the launch will demonstrate the biogas advantage as a cheaper and cleaner option of electrification than the use of fossil fuels like petrol and diesel.
The launch is expected to bring together relevant government agencies in agriculture, environment, energy as well as other stakeholders to formulate operational blueprint for bio-gas options for off-grid communities in Nigeria.
