Lagos, FCT top states with highest reported crime cases

Lagos, FCT and Delta have the highest reported crime cases with 66, 000 out of the 125, 790 reports in 2016.

Katsina, Abia and Zamfara states recorded the least reported crime cases in the year, according to the Crime Statistics released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday in Abuja.

A breakdown showed that offence against property has the highest number of reported cases with 65,397, while offence against persons recorded 45, 554 cases.

Offences against properties are those offences against human belonging, including properties of any kind such as stealing, receiving stolen properties, obtaining property by false pretence, robbery, burglary and house breaking.

Offences against persons are those offences against human beings such as murder, manslaught­er, infanticid­e, concealmen­t of birth, rape and other physical abuses.

Analysis of the report showed that offence against lawful authority and local acts recorded the least with 12,144 and 2,695 cases recorded respective­ly.

Offences against lawful authority are those committed against any establishm­ent of the law such as tax evasion while Local Acts are those laws that cannot be enforced outside Nigeria such as Liquor Act or Firearms Act.

Lagos State reported 36.08 per cent of the total reported cases totalling 45,385 cases while the FCT and Delta States reported 10.48 per cent, totalling 13,181 cases and 6.25 per cent, totalling 7,867 cases respective­ly.

Katsina State has the lowest percentage share of total cases reported with 0.10 per cent and 120 cases recorded while Abia and Zamfara States followed closely with 0.29 per cent, totalling 364 and 0.38 per cent, totalling 483 cases recorded respective­ly.
