Robbers storm Kaduna village, cart away cattle

Scores of robbers Monday night invaded Kungi, a settlement about 8 kilometers from Birnin Gwari and carted away all the herds of cattle they could find.

Birnin Gwari is about 100 kilometers from Kaduna.

A witness Alhaji Saidu Kungi who narrated what happened to our correspondent, said the armed men came into the village about 11 pm on Monday and were shooting sporadically into the air, causing panic.

He said the robbers went from house to house ordering those that kept cattle in their compounds to open the shed after which they would guide the cattle to the bush while shooting to scare away people until they finished their operation about 2 am and left.

Kungi said a pick-up vehicle loaded with policemen, probably alerted by the shooting, arrived the village after the robbers left and asked the villagers to show them the direction the robbers went.

He said when the police made to go after them, the robbers turned and started shooting towards the direction of the village and the police retreated.

The witness said more than 38 cows were taken by the robbers that night and none had been recovered.

Elders of the village yesterday met to discuss the issue but had not finalized on the steps to take as at the time our correspondent asked to speak with them.

Birnin Gwari and the communities surrounding it have been victims of several attacks due to their proximity to the Kamuku forest.

Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna, ASP Usman Aliyu promised to crosscheck with the unit in Birnin Gwari when our correspondent called.
