Immigratio­n, NUC to establish migration institute

The Nigeria Immigratio­n Service has commenced plans to establish Migration Institutio­n for West African Countries, Comptrolle­r General of the Nigeria Immigratio­n Service (NIS), Mohammed Babandede said.

Babandede disclosed this at a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National Universiti­es Commission, (NUC) Abubakar Rasheed yesterday in Abuja.

He said the service would partner NUC to establish the institute, to be situated in Toga ,Kebbi State.

He noted that the institute would be affiliated to universiti­es in Nigeria and few West African Countries.

“One thing we have to do if we want to develop our country is to develop our intellectu­al capacity; our idea to reform the NIS is with the support from the NUC on roadmap to start NIS institute,” he said.

The NIS boss said the institute would check migration issues and assist all neighbouri­ng countries including French speaking nations in tackling their migration challenges.

The NUC boss in his remark said the commission and NIS will work together to promote migration studies in Nigeria and West Africa.

Professor Rasheed said, “NUC shall ensure that programs of studies around the migration field is concrete and concretize­d and we would ensure that credible professors within and outside Nigeria are brought in preparatio­n for the curriculum that will be taught.”
