‘How Nigeria can solve its energy crisis’

- By Chris Agabi

Nigeria is currently the biggest energy market in the world, Prof. John Ifediora, the Director/ Editor-in-Chief, Council for African Security and Development (CASADE) has declared.

The University of Wisconsin don who spoke to our correspondent in Abuja, also said Nigeria must subsidise renewable energy solutions to solve its energy crisis.

Prof. Ifediora, whose CASADE is organising the US-Africa Energy Summit 2017 holding September in Madison, Wisconsin, in the United States, said the deficit in Africa’s energy supply informed the summit.

He added that Nigeria’s energy market would grow bigger as the economy grew and population increased, hence there must be sufficient political will to address the rot in the sector and position it on the part of sufficiency.

He particularly, made a case for renewable energy for Nigeria and the rest of Africa, adding that the summit would bring renewable global companies in the United States and Africa together to look at best solutions to Africa’s power crisis in general and Nigeria, specifically.

He also advocated for some form of subsides to renewable energy companies in Nigeria and other African countries so that they could contribute effectively to the energy gap.

He said the Summit intended to address all aspects of the energy value chain, from generation to storage and distribution, even as he advocated for Africa to invest in smart grids technology rather than the national grid model.
