Accidents claim 88 lives in 5 months in Bauchi — FRSC

- From Balarabe Alkassim, Bauchi

In Bauchi State, 88 people lost their lives while 572 were injured in various road accidents between January and May 2017.

This was contained in a Road Traffic Crashes report by the Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

The report indicates that 1,364 people were involved in 138 road traffic crashes, out of which 24 were fatal, 79 categorised as serious while 23 were minor accidents with no fatalities.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Abdulrazak Najume, said accidents were increasing in the state as a result of overspeeding and the ongoing construction work within and outside the Bauchi metropolis as well as the recent removal of speed bumps from highways across the state.

He said the removal of speed bumps had encouraged people to drive recklessly. “The level of recklessness is causing a lot of concern, with accidents here and there, both on the major highways and within the town. There’s hardly a day that passes without our officials going out for the rescue of accident victims. Despite our everyday campaigns, people are not listening,” he said.
