SPORT Cameroon beaten, Portugal held in Confederations Cup opener

-

Arturo Vidal and Eduardo Vargas gave Chile a 2-0 victory over Cameroon in their Confederations Cup Group B opener, despite two controversial goal decisions by the Video Assistant Referee yesterday. Chile, reigning two-time Copa America winners, were without Arsenal star forward Alexis Sanchez to begin the match but he came on as a second-half substitute later on.

Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi had said the Gunners forward was a doubt after hurting his left ankle in training on Thursday, and confirmed that worry when he released the team sheet and Sanchez was not included in the starting XI.

In the other match of the day, Cristiano Ronaldo set up the opening goal as his Portugal side were held to a draw by Mexico in their first game at the Confederations Cup in Russia.

Pepe had a goal disallowed for offside after a referral to the video assistant referees before Ricardo Quaresma sold the keeper a dummy and slotted in.

Javier Hernandez equalised with a low header from Carlos Vela’s cross.

Cedric Soares’ 86th-minute shot was deflected in, but Hector Moreno snatched a point in the 91st minute.
