- By Adam Umar By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

Aprimary school teacher in Zuba, FCT has committed suicide allegedly because his wife had abandoned him.

City News gathered that the victim identified only as Abu, allegedly drank a substance believed to be an insecticide, popularly called Sniper on Friday.

One of the neighbours of the deceased, who gave his name as Umar Faruk, described the deceased as a very kind person who related well with everyone.

He said the deceased was a teacher at LEA Primary School Rumji before the incident.

He said the late teacher had a misunderstanding with his wife about two months ago which eventually led to the wife fleeing to an unknown destination.

He added that the wife fled her matrimonial home along with their only son and that all effort to locate her by the deceased proved abortive.

The landlady of the deceased told our reporter that she was notified about the incident by one of her tenants after he saw the late teacher lying unconscious in his room with foam coming out from his mouth.

“I sought for assistance from other people in the house and took him to a clinic but he was certified dead.

“On returning home, we discovered a suicide note with an empty container of Sniper near the letter. I reported the matter to Zuba police station and the police followed me and picked the items to the station.

“Later that evening, in the presence of some of his relatives, his remains were laid to rest,” the land lady who did not want to be named said.

She said the victim hailed from Okene, Kogi State.

The suicide note read, “I am sorry for what I am about to do, my sister, my brothers and my wife left me, I see no reason why I should be alive. I just have to end my life so that everybody will have rest of mind bye. Please take good care of my son. If he grows up tell him that his father loved him and good bye all.”

The Divisional Police Officer of Zuba, CSP Bashir Kontagora did not respond to calls made by our reporter or text message sent to his phone. The Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Mr. Joseph K. Shazin, yesterday said the six area councils of the FCT need special intervention in order for them to survive the harsh economic situation in the country.

Shazin, who is also chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), made the observation during an interview with our reporter.

He said the area councils have been facing the challenge of inadequate funds to meet the yearnings of the electorate.

He urged the FCT minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, to intervene so that the area councils would have funds to carry out projects that would impact on the lives of the people.

The chairman noted that the area councils have been battling to pay staff salaries, adding that his council still owed staff two months’ salaries. He urged the FCT administration to intervene to enable the area councils have a sense of belonging.

“So as a ruling party, we are calling on the FCT minister to intervene so that we can stand firm to provide democratic dividends to our electorate,” he added.
