Quit notice: NANS holds peace rally Sept 30 – Oct 3

- From Tony Adibe, Enugu

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday said it has concluded plans to organize a peace and unity rally in Kaduna from September 30 to October 3, 2017.

The body of students said that the rally would reassure people in the northern part of the country and indeed the entire country that the nation is united, emphasizing the students’ intention to “occupy the psyche of the country with our message of peace and unity.”

Addressing a press briefing, NANS National President, Comrade Aruna Kadiri, said members of NANS could not fold their hands and watch the unity of the country being threatened by certain groups, hence the decision to intervene.

“By the time we converge on Kaduna and douse the tension, we must have achieved peace. Our convergence here in Enugu is a process of reducing tension and aggression. We will continue in our rally to preach about peace in our country,” he said.

Kadiri said the issues heating up the polity included the agitation for Biafra, campaign for restructuring, struggle to maintain the status quo and the threats by some Arewa youths to eject the Igbo from the North by October 1, 2017.

“In between all these agitations there must be a solution which will keep Nigeria united, just and equitable. We must begin to engage. It is very urgent because we are already in a state of emergency where youth corps members frequently seek redeployment on security grounds,” Kadiri said.
