Yandaba: Kano police arrest 210 suspects, prosecute 49
No fewer than 210 suspected members of Yandaba groups have been arrested and 49 others prosecuted in Kano State within the first week of July 2017, Daily Trust reports.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of a special raid on Yandaba hideouts in the state metropolis, the police spokesman, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said 33 suspects were convicted to 3-5 years’ imprisonment without options of fine due to the weight of their culpability.
Majia added that 16 youths, who were arrested in connection with Yandaba activities, including possession of dangerous locally made weapons such as knives, cutlasses, sticks, cudgels and swords, and quantities of Indian hemp and other intoxicants bagged one year jail term each without option of fine.
The police spokesman also said two suspected notorious armed robbers, Mohammed Suleiman alias Aljan of Sheka quarters, Kano and Rabi’u Abdullahi alias Hitler of Hausawa quarters have been arrested.
He explained that until their arrest, the suspects had persisted in armed robbery, snatching of phones, killing of victims around Sheka, Darmanawa, Hausawa Gyadi-Gyadi, Maidile, Danmaliki, Sabuwar Gandu, Shagari quarters and Ja’en areas in the state metropolis.
“Aljan fled Kano for Abuja about five months ago after committing armed robbery, but was eventually arrested after he returned to Kano on Sallah day. A case of armed robbery was established against him, and he would be charged to court for the offence,” he said.
DSP Majia also stated that two suspected fraudsters, Sanusi Sani Gona of Filin Samji and Bashir Mohammed of Mashi all of Katsina State have been arrested for defrauding innocent youth of their money under the guise of sponsorship to study abroad.
He said, “The suspects and two others now at large conspired under the aegis of the APC North/West Zone Youth Forum in collaboration with oil and gas union to defraud students and youth with a promise of scholarship to study abroad.
“They were arrested collecting application fee of N8,000 at Rumfa College Kano and Katsina State Ministry of Agriculture respectively. Over 200 victims were identified while N2,234,200 was recovered from them.”
He said while investigation was extended to Kaduna and Katsina states to arrest other accomplices, the account they were operating had already been blocked.
