Melaye: Saraki, Ekweremadu challenge Kogi Attorney-General
Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday tongue lashed the Attorney General of Kogi State, Ibrahim Sanni Muhammed, over an advertorial on Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi).
The Kogi Commissioner of Justice had in a 3-page advert in national dailies, tagged ‘Re: Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu says efforts made to recall Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West, is an exercise in futility,’ faulted the position taken by the Ekweremadu on the ongoing processes to recall Senator Melaye.
Raising a point of order at yesterday’s plenary, Ekweremadu said the commissioner of justice spent N12m on advert in five national dailies to respond to his submission on Melaye’s recall.
“He is saying that the Senate has no role; I stand by what I said the other day and I would like to take him to Section 68(1H) and (2) on the role of the Senate.
“I don’t know how he came to the conclusion that we don’t have a role; I stand by my position. So, I pity the people of Kogi that hired this type of person as Attorney General. It is unfortunate that we are paying a public servant and he is unable to do a simple work of looking at the constitution, “he said.
“So, for him not to know about it… I don’t know whether he went to law school or not, because if he has been properly educated, he would have been conversant with the basic provisions of the constitution, “he said.
He called on the Kogi State House of Assembly to institute an inquiry on who paid for the advert and find a way of getting the money back to pay the salaries of workers.
In his remark, Saraki expressed concern on the caliber of people holding senior positions in government.
“What is even more disturbing and irresponsible is how they spent N10 million on adverts. This shows that it is government that is truly behind the entire process,” he said.
