Lawyers flay traffic, environmental laws violation by FCT residents

-

Some Abuja-based lawyers have condemned the frequent violation of traffic and environmental laws by many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The lawyers who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja, said “obedience of these simple laws will enthrone orderliness and sanity in the city.’’

Mrs Lilian Adebayo, a lawyer, said every law must be obeyed, adding that no law is trivial.

“There are not many streets light in Abuja, agreed, but there are traffic lights which help to control the traffic flow and orderliness, But most road users would rather cause confusion than obey it.

“Our traffic unit can generate huge revenue tracking down those who disobey traffic rules.

“Our environmental officers could generate revenue if they start arresting those who throw refuse on the road from their vehicles.

“Because people do these things and go free, it looks as if the system is not working,“Adebayo said.

Another lawyer, Mr Abdulkarim Shaibu, frowned at the disobedience of traffic rules by uniformed men.

“Obeying laws will help us; we have to demonstrate that Nigerians obey the laws of the land.

“If a military officer disregards the law, he should be punished the same way a civilian is punished,’’ he said.
