Fish farmers have been advised to purchase the right seeds for better productivity.

Dr James Apochi, National Coordinator , West Africa Productivity Programme (WAAPP) made this call yesterday in a workshop held in Abuja by Grand Cereals LTD, producers of Vital Fish Feed.

He reiterated that farmers must put away nonchalant attitude towards fish farming in the country and see it as a lucrative business in boosting the nation’s economy.

Dr Apochi said the government in collaboration with the West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) was ready to support them in every aspect in yielding productivity.

‘Nigerians have what it takes to compete with the rest of the world in fish production; therefore we should be given all the support we need.’ He said.

He said WAAPP is partnering with other organizations and institutions in training farmers who are into the business and aspiring farmers.

Also speaking at the event, the National Sales Manager of Vital Fish Feed, Mr. Israel Yusuf encouraged fish farmers to look out for feeds with high feed conversion appropriate for output.

He said some of the reasons why some farmers don’t succeed are due to poor fish seed, over stocking, poor medication, and improper water management among others.

He stressed the need for farmers to keep proper record of their daily endeavors, frequent maintenance, and devise good market strategies.

Few among the participants expressed gratitude with the organizer of the event. They pleaded with the government to provide a conducive and enabling environment for them to succeed.

The workshop was organized by Grand Cereals to build the capacity of fish farmers in the FCT.
