Anambra election: Police warn IPOB over threat to attack rallies
The police in Anambra State have vowed to deal ruthlessly with anybody or group who intend to foment trouble ahead of the November 18 governorship election in the state.
The warning is coming against repeated threats by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to boycott the election, as well as alleged plot to attack political rallies in the state.
Daily Trust gathered that the alleged plot was part of IPOB’s plans to cause apathy in the poll, which started manifesting at the weekend at in Ogbaru Government Area.
A group of youths suspected to be members of IPOB had allegedly disrupted a church function attended by a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Progressives Peoples Alliance, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo.
“I am deeply concerned because these people want to start to instill fear in people in order to cause voter apathy in the election,” a source said.
The source said the development might compel the Federal Government to flood the state with security Odoekpe Local personnel which might result in scaring voters thereby forcing them to stay indoors during the election.
However, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Garba, after a meeting with other security agencies in the state, issued a statement saying the police and other security agencies would not hesitate to deal decisively with any individual or group under any guise that would want to disrupt public peace.
The statement warned any group nursing such plans to perish the idea or be ready to be visited by the heavy arm of the law.
