3 LG caretaker nominees fail screening at Kano Assembly

- From Yusha’u A. Ibrahim, Kano

The Kano State House of Assembly yesterday cleared 32 of the 44 nominees sent by Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje for confirmation as Interim Management Officers (IMOs) for local government areas in the state.

The house, at its plenary yesterday, also disqualified nominees from Garko, Dawakin Kudu and Fagge local government areas while screening of nine nominees from Kumbotso, Gaya, Karaye, Municipal, Nassarawa, Wudil, Gwale, Gabasawa and Bebeji local government areas was still pending.

While presenting his report, Chairman of the screening committee, Abba Ibrahim Garko, said the nominee from Fagge Local Government was disqualified because he was not a career civil servant, while that of Garko lost the bid for “geographical separation and lack of prudent integrity.”

Garko added that the nominee from Dawakin Kudu was disqualified based on the provision of Section 47 sub-section six of the Local Government Service Law.

Although Garko did not disclose the reasons for suspending the screening of the nine nominees, a source in the house confided in Daily Trust that there was politics behind the delay.

“Take the nominees from Gaya, Nassarawa and Kumbotso local governments for instance, they met all the criteria needed for the appointment, but because they have problems with their lawmakers, the house decided to block their chance. So, if they can sort it out with their lawmakers, they can be cleared by the house and subsequently get the appointment,” he said.
