- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Apoliceman was among 110 persons arrested for various electoral offences during Saturday’s local government election in Lagos State.

The policeman was reportedly arrested in a commercial bus at the Agege area of Lagos with electoral materials while escorting two others to an unknown destination.

Items recovered from the suspects included tomb printed ballot papers and boxes, witnesses said.

Aside the arrests, policemen also recovered a ballot box and some electoral materials from hoodlums who allegedly hijacked them from officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission ((LASIEC).

In some places, such as Post Office and Akala area of Mushin, hoodlums allegedly engaged themselves in a shootout during the polls.

Though nobody could give account of number of casualties, sources said some persons sustained varying degrees of injury.

The spokesman of the police in Lagos State, Olarinde Famous Cole, told Daily Trust on phone, yesterday, that about 110 persons were arrested while the election was going on.

He said the number could be higher, adding that the command was still awaiting reports from other areas in the state.

“Those arrested have been detained at the command and they would soon be charged to court for electoral offences,” he said.
