5 kidnappers killed in Ogun

Five suspected kidnappers have been killed by the Police at Egba Owode area of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident occurred in a shootout Tuesday night at a forest where the kidnappers were holding their captive, a policeman, and demanding N100 million ransom.

The State Police Command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, while parading the five corpses to newsmen at Egba Owode Divisional Police Headquarte­rs, reiterated that the kidnappers engaged police in a shootout during rescue operation of the victim.

He said the abducted victim had been in captivity for five days after he was waylaid last Friday and dragged out of his vehicle at gunpoint before he was taken into a forest along AjuraOgere road in the council area.

Oyeyemi said the kidnappers within the period the victim was in their custody made contact with his family to demand the N100 million.

“But, the Commission­er of Police, Ahmed Ilyasu gave a marching order to rescue the victim and apprehend the suspected kidnappers. The police stormed the forest. The kidnappers immediatel­y engaged police in the gun duel, leading to the death of five of them while one of them escaped with bullet wound,” Opeyemi said.

The rescued victim Stephen Adesokan narrated his ordeal to journalist­s, “I was driving on the fateful day when the suspects accosted me. The bandits emerged from a nearby bush and at gun point forced me out of the car, after which they led me into a bush, trekking for about an hour.”

Adesokan who is a police orderly to Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ibara Divisional Police Headquarte­rs in Abeokuta, added that the bandits later declared to him that they were kidnappers and ordered him to speak to his family on phone.
