Bauchi commences school feeding scheme

The National HomeGrown School Feeding program took off in Bauchi yesterday.

A statement by the Special Assistant to Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar on Non-Government­al Organizati­ons (NGOs) and Social Investment Programmes ( SIPs), Mansur Manu Soro, said the programme engaged 3,261 people to cook for 307,013 pupils in over 2,000 primary schools across the state.

He said the feeding of Bauchi State pupils would gulp the average sum of N21.4million daily and N537.2 million monthly.

“The programme seeks to provide one free nutritiona­lly balanced hot meal a day to pupils in all public primary schools and by so doing, establish a safety net for the poor and reduce malnutriti­on in school-age children while stimulatin­g the state agricultur­al economy,” he said, adding, “In line with the provisions of memorandum of understand­ing, the Governor Mohammed Abubakar-led administra­tion will ensure continuous logistical support and effective implementa­tion of the programme,” he added.
