FG trains stakeholders on social register in Nasarawa
The Federal Government, through the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) has commenced the training of Community Based Targeting Teams (CBTTs) and State Operations Coordinating Units (SOCUs) in Nasarawa State toward building a comprehensive social register of the poor and vulnerable for government interventions.
Speaking at the commencement of the training under the office of the Vice President, the National Coordinator of NASSCO, Peter Papka, said the exercise was part of efforts to alleviate poverty and empower the poor and vulnerable households in the country.
Represented by Vincent Oriokpa, head of the national social registry of NASSCO, Papka said that past poverty reduction programmes with huge government spending had not yielded commensurate results as people were getting poorer rather than getting out of poverty.
He explained that 108 participants of the CBT teams identified from across six poorest local government areas of Awe, Lafia, Kokona, Akwanga, Nasarawa and Wamba in Nasarawa State, would be trained on the CBT process to guide respective communities on identification of poor and vulnerable households.
On his part, Governor Umaru AlMakura of the state, who declared the workshop open, commended the Federal Government’s social safety net programme aimed at providing succour to citizens, especially the indigent members of the society with the view to accelerant growth and development.
