Super Eagles’ve every reason to be afraid of Cameroon – Babangida

- By David Ngobua

Fo r m e r international, Tijani Babangida has said the Super Eagles have every reason to be afraid of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon but that should not stop them from beating their arch-rivals on September 1 in Uyo.

He told Daily Trust that as champions of Africa, Cameroon will do everything to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“Super Eagles every reason to panic because we are playing against African champions. It is usually very rare for the reigning African champion not to go to the world Cup.

“Secondly we didn’t play very well in our last home match against South Africa and that will motivate them.

“In addition, there is this rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon and any match involving the two countries is usually like a war.

“However, anytime the Eagles are pushed to the wall, they fight back. At the moment they are condemned to beat Cameroon, if they are to remain on track for the 2018 World Cup.

“Something tells me they can do it but it won’t be easy against a highly motivated Cameroonian team with tested players,” he said.

Babangida in addition said even as he is optimistic that the Eagles can get a good result against Cameroon, he is not very comfortable with the present form of most of the players.

He said most of them are not playing regularly in their clubs and may lack match fitness.

“Most of the players are not featuring regularly for their clubs. Some have just started the season. So why most of them may not be in form, the Cameroonians who took part in the Confederations Cup in Russia would have an edge over the Eagles in terms of fitness.

“However, that shouldn’t stop the Eagles from fighting to maintain their leadership of the group,” he said.
